Aluminum Foam

Aluminum foam, based on aluminum, is an isotropic highly porous metallic material with a cellular structure containing more than 70 vol.% of pores. As its special structure and the original characteristics of aluminum, aluminum foam has the properties of low density, good corrosion, wear resistance and low thermal expansion which can be widely used in lightweight structural components, shock or sound absorbing products.

Special Properties

  • Weather resistance
  • Corrosion resistance—Exposure to the Marine atmosphere for 1 year, no obvious abnormalities. Accelerating aging of salt spray for 2 years, no obvious abnormalities. Spraying anti-corrosion materials on the surface can improve the ability to prevent corrosion further.
  • Hygroscopicity—No hygroscopic phenomenon in aluminum foam, no performance degradation due to moisture absorption.
  • Thermal insulation—Thermal conductivity of aluminum foam is 0.25-0.62W/m·K, it has good heat insulation performance.
  • Thermostability—Linear expansion coefficient of aluminum foam is 19.34*10-6/℃, not easy to defoam.
  • Sound insulation performance

High sound absorption plate can be made by drilling closed cell aluminum foam plate. When the opening rate is 1-3%, the absorption rate is the highest. The sound absorption rate is 40-80% In the range of 1000-2000Hz.
Aluminum foam sandwich board as sound insulation board, thickness 20mm the sound insulation 20-40dB.

Applications

There are two kinds of aluminum foams, open cell foam and closed-cell aluminum foam. Open cell foam is full of cells that aren't completely encapsulated. This makes the foam a softer, more flexible material. Closed cell foam is made up of cells that are, as the name suggests, completely closed.

  • Open cell aluminum foam

On the other hand, due to its metal characteristics and porous structure, open cell aluminum foam has excellent sound absorption and fire resistance and is environment-friendly and waterproof. It can be widely used to filter gases and liquids, to reduce the noise of pneumatic devices, as forming tools to produce EPP (expanded polypropylene)/EPS (expanded polystyrene) products, for vacuum tables, for various heat exchangers, etc.

  • Closed-cell aluminum foam

For its low density, very high stiffness and the cellular structure, closed-cell aluminum foam is widely used as a lightweight construction material in the automotive industry as impact, acoustic and vibration absorbers, in the aerospace industry as components for turbines or spatial cones, in the construction industry as a fire-proof, structural and protective barrier against explosions or heavy sound, as well as in the naval industry.
