Copper Foam

Copper foam is a copper based multifunctional material with a large number of open or closed holes, typically 75-95% of the volume consisting of void spaces. It has the features of good conductivity and malleability making it an excellent material both in functional and structural material fields. Copper foam can be used to prepare battery anode (carrier) materials, catalyst carriers and electromagnetic shielding materials.

Special Properties

  • High thermal conductivity—The thermal conductivity of copper foam is >6W/M.K, much higher than other metal foams. Thus, it is widely used as heat conduction and heat dissipation material in motors, electrical appliances and electronic components.
  • Excellent electrical conductivity—For copper is one of the standard materials for electrical applications because it provides more current carrying capacity for a given diameter of wire than any other engineering metal. Thus, copper foam drew big attention in the electrode materials of nickel-zinc batteries and electric double-layer capacitors.
  • High porosity—Copper foam has three-dimensional porous transparent structure, and the porosity can reach 95+%. Besides, it has good metal strength, lighter material weight at the same volume, good sound absorption, energy absorption, electromagnetic shielding performance.
  • Stable structure—Due to the porous and stable structure of copper foam, and its harmless to the human body, copper foam is an excellent filtering materials in medicine and water purification.

Applications

  • Electrode Material

Excellent electrical conductivity of copper foam makes it widely used as electrode frame materials for new batteries such as nickel-zinc batteries and electric double-layer capacitors. Li[1], et al. compared the removal of bromate by electrochemical reduction at various cathodes and the results indicated that the removal efficiency of bromate at the copper foam electrode was significantly higher than that at the graphite, carbon paper or nickel foam electrode.

  • Silencing and Shielding Material

Sound waves will be diffusely reflected on the surface of the copper foam, and the sound absorption effect is achieved through the principles of material expansion and microporous noise elimination. In addition to being as a very good silencing material, cooper foam is also an excellent electromagnetic shielding material, and its shielding performance is close to silver.

  • Thermally Conductive Material

Excellent thermal conductivity of copper foam makes it a flame-retardant material with excellent performance. It has been applied to many advanced fire-fighting equipment abroad, especially as a flame isolation device. In addition, copper foam finds its application in heat dissipation materials for motors and electrical appliances.

  • Chemical Engineering Field

As the porous structure, high conductivity, high mechanical strength, copper foam can be used as catalyst and its carrier, filter medium, medium in separator, etc. For example, in many organic chemical reactions, attempts have been made to directly replace the punched copper plate with copper foam with a large specific surface area as a chemical reaction catalyst; copper foam has also been successfully used as a photo-catalytic air purification carrier.
